Where to Go for Memorial Day
It’s that time of year again. Memorial Day fast approaches, and the Los Angeles rentals will soon be awash with patriotic activity. This unofficial start to the summer will be jam-packed with all sorts of fun events taking place all across the city, so today, we’ll help you narrow down the options with a few highlights we found to be interesting.
Catch a Show at the Hollywood Bowl
Since its inception in 1922, the Hollywood Bowl has been the prime LA destination for catching a great performance, and Memorial Day weekend will prove to be no exception. This year, on Sunday, May 26th (the night right before Memorial Day), they’ve got an exciting evening of 90s classics planned, with New Kids on the Block: The Mixtape Tour. Accompanying the legendary Boston boy band will be a lineup of “special guests” that includes Salt N Pepa, Naughty By Nature, Tiffany, and Debbie Gibson. It’ll be a veritable overload of nostalgia, so if you’re craving a trip back to that bygone era, this is the spot for you.
Go See a Dodgers Game
The Dodgers’ season has been off to a pretty good start so far, with them becoming the team to beat in the NL West. Hopefully they’ll keep the momentum going, and you’ll be able to see them put on a good showing when they take on the New York Mets at Dodgers Stadium on Memorial Day, May 27th. Pretzels, beer, and 9 innings of action on Memorial Day — can it get much more American than that?
Enjoy Some Riveting Rooftop Cinema
While there won’t be any screenings right on Memorial Day, the Rooftop Cinema Club will be hosting movies over the weekend before Memorial Day for you to enjoy, one being a celebration of Women in Film, on a part of the special Hip Hop Night event and another a Programmer’s Pick:
- Saturday, May 25th — Spice World — “World famous pop group the Spice Girls zip around London in their luxurious double decker tour bus having various adventures and performing for their fans.”
- Saturday, May 25th — Do The Right Thing — “On the hottest day of the year on a street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, everyone's hate and bigotry smolders and builds until it explodes into violence.”
- Sunday, May 26th — Ordinary People — “Based on the best-selling novel by Judith Guest and directed by Robert Redford - The accidental death of the older son of an affluent family deeply strains the relationships among the bitter mother, the good-natured father, and the guilt-ridden younger son.”
Rooftop Cinema, you’ll note, has two locations in LA — the Neuehouse in Hollywood and Level in DTLA. Make sure you know which you’re heading to so that you can plan accordingly, and snag those tickets well in advance so you can ensure yourself a spot at the screening!
Hit the Water in Marina Del Ray
If you’re thinking the ocean is more your Memorial Day hangout, you’ll want to head to Marina Del Ray on Saturday, May 25th for Yacht Day. No crazy party-yacht fiascos here, however, this is just a relaxed get together on a private charter, where guests will listen to music, eat, drink, talk, laugh, game, admire sunny coastal water views, and, of course, get those beautiful shots for their Instagram accounts, set against the backdrop of the stunning Pacific Ocean.
Do a Bit of Memorial Day Weekend Club Hopping
Just about every holiday weekend is suitable for some club hopping, Memorial Day included. This year, the Hollywood Memorial Day Weekend Club Crawl will have all the action, taking you on a guided adventure through Hollywood’s finest nightlife spots, while enjoying those drink specials, games, and a “party-hardy” group atmosphere.
Hit Up the “Hottest Party in the City”
Taking place Sunday, May 26th, at Playhouse in Hollywood is the One Night Stand Memorial Day Weekend Party. The idea is a simple one (if you’re still young enough to hang with the late-night revelers), “no school/work the next day, so why not spend the night partying until 3AM?” That’s a question you’ll have to ask yourself, and if the answer has you seeking out this particular soiree, be prepared for several hours worth of “over the top debauchery” along with your ticket purchase.
Try a Bit of Mindfulness
If you’d like your Memorial Day experience to go hand-in-hand with a noble cause, then you might consider the 2nd Annual Wellness Fest in Leimert Park. In addition to the fun, food, and live entertainment provided by Silky D and the celebrity DJs in attendance, there will be a deliberate focus here on mental health awareness:
“The goal of Memorial Day Mindfulness Weekend is to provide mental healing, liberation, and empowerment for all who attend and honor those who fought for liberty in the U.S., Haiti and abroad.”
This event will take place in collaboration with a great many community organizations, and will be a great way to spend your Memorial Day for not one, but two worthwhile causes.
Relax and Get Creative
Of course, you may want nothing more on Memorial Day Weekend than to chill, and vibe out to the sounds of a talented DJ. The Puff & Paint Party will be the location for you, in that case, as the fourth installment of this wildly popular event will be offering up complimentary drinks, delicious food, great music, special guest art instruction, and an unmatched atmosphere of cool for you to enjoy on May 26th.
